I don’t usually feel deprived on a healthy diet. Because it’s all about moderation. But the holidays can be more difficult. There are so many decadent treats. I can’t have them all! So to fulfill my holiday cravings while not blowing my diet, I’ve been on the quest for a healthy, diet friendly peppermint hot chocolate.
It started with my playing around in the kitchen. And my diet friendly peppermint hot chocolate was born. This hot chocolate has all the fun of a coffee house drink. But without all the sugar and carbs that make those drinks fattening. It’s extremely light while tasting rich.
My history with the peppermint hot chocolate
I didn’t grow up in a family that was big on holiday food. I maybe had a couple of candy canes every year. Perhaps a bag of Hanukkah gelt. But that was it. When I thought of holidays, I didn’t think of specific foods or drink.
That all changed the year I moved to Los Angeles. Let’s travel back to the early 2000s. That’s when I first went to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. And I tried my first ever peppermint mocha. Seriously people – my life changed.
It’s an understatement to use the work like. My reaction was more on the level of love. And there was a deep ache in the pit of my stomach when it left the menu in January. I could deal with the end of the holidays. But oh how I missed the chocolate, peppermint combo.
So I started looking forward to holiday foods. Mainly my favorite drink. And back then I indulged all the time. I wasn’t really health conscious. Today’s a different story. So when I came up with my diet friendly healthy peppermint hot chocolate, my happy healthy lifestyle was complete.
Almost a Superfood drink
Most coffee house peppermint hot chocolate drinks have very processed ingredients. And don’t forget that many have jittery-making coffee. Not this one. In fact, it’s kind of nourishing.
It has fresh mint leaves. There’s also pure cacao. And the only sweetener is a little stevia.
As a bonus, this peppermint hot chocolate helps keep you full and protects against cravings. That’s because it contains filling protein powder. So a cup of this bad boy can potentially assist you with your cravings later. Because the protein will help fill you up now.
Choosing the ingredients
I specifically chose ingredients that are wholesome. There’s no junk in this drink. This peppermint hot chocolate is full of good-for-you ingredients. But there are a couple things of which to be aware:
First, watch out for hidden sugar. The drink uses non-dairy milk like almond or coconut milk. Make sure to buy unsweetened milk. Otherwise your drink will have a whole bunch of added sugar you weren’t intending.
Second, protein powders vary by taste. So feel free to use any chocolate protein powder you like that is stevia sweetened. But understand that your powder will alter the taste. Personally, I think there are protein powders that taste awful. I used Orgain Chocolate Protein Powder for this recipe.
