Here’s something nobody tells you about a healthy lifestyle. Toxicity can play a bigger role in your health than you think. In fact, excess toxicity can be a cause of stubborn extra pounds or bloating. This is why air filters might be a great addition for your body detox goals.
There were years when I felt like I was doing everything right but wasn’t seeing results. Gosh – how frustrating. I wish someone had told me that a healthy body involves more than restricting calories. And that to reach me goals, I’d have to see if I was experiencing any other body imbalances.
Pollution and your body
We’re all exposed to chemicals and pollution. This happens daily. But our bodies are designed to protect us from the onslaught of chemicals, They do this by tucking the chemicals and toxicity in a place where it is least likely to hurt us.
Where might that safe place be? In our fat cells. Chemicals are safely tucked into these fat cells, far away from our bloodstream where they can do real damage. And this works marvelously until something comes along to create a breaking point. The surprising thing is that losing weight can be that breaking point.
You start to trim up, which also means you lose fat cells. And now toxins from the lost fat start pouring into your bloodstream. Who knew there was a downside to losing weight?
But it can get worse. When these toxins get dumped into your bloodstream, it can cause inflammation. And this inflammation can halt your weight loss in its tracks. This is called a weight loss plateau.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t lose weight. Not within the least. It just means you need to prepare for this extra toxicity.
Home air filters to the rescue
Air filters in your home can help this toxicity nightmare. We all have a level of toxicity in our homes. This might be the natural gas in our stoves or our heating. It could be the paint on our walls, the material in our mattresses, or the carpet on our floors.
This isn’t a reason to panic. It’s just good to know these things exist and that they can have an effect on our bodies. And that this effect can be magnified if we’re trying to lose weight. Air filters help to take the chemicals out of the air and ease the chemical burden.
And this won’t just make you healthier. By easing toxicity, it can help relieve bodily inflammation. And this can potentially help you avoid a toxin induced weight loss plateau.
But before you run to the store to check out their air filters, you want to know what to look for. Any old filter won’t do. Air filters need two components to be truly effective at reducing the harmful chemicals in your home.
HEPA filters
HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. And HEPA filters are fabulous for air quality. Suffer from allergies? These filters significantly reduce airborne allergens.
These are things like pet dander, pollen, and dust mites. And a good HEPA filter is essential if anyone in your home suffers from allergies.
But even if you don’t have full-blown allergies, HEPA filters have their benefits. All of these pollutants can contribute to inflammation. But keep in mind that HEPA filters’ benefits stop with allergens. They don’t protect against more serious chemicals.
Many cheaper air filters only contain a HEPA filter. So read the specification of air filters before you purchase. Because you definitely want a HEPA filter. But you also need a carbon filter if you really want the job done.
Carbon filters
HEPA filters get part of the job done. But carbon filters make it complete. You need both of these types of filters to properly detoxify your home from the highest threat toxins.
Carbon filters are better for absorbing smoke and other gaseous materials. This might be the gas from the stove or volatile organic compounds coming from your furniture or your paint.
These types of chemicals are different than allergens. You might not notice an immediate physical difference when you breathe them in like you do with allergens. But they can have a serious impact over time, including contributing to a risk of cancer.
The trick with carbon is that more really is better. A thin strip of carbon will only do so much. But a great amount of carbon will really be able to fully absorb the chemicals and impurities.
Air filters, weight loss, and health
Reducing toxicity, along with a healthy diet and exercise, can help you reach a healthy weight. They can reduce the internal inflammation that can lead to a weight loss plateau. And air filters can help make your home environment less toxic. A good filter is an investment that can have benefits for year.
If you can’t afford an air filter, taking other steps to reduce toxicity is also helpful. This might include a detox diet, juicing, bringing in lots of house plants, or just being mindful to reduce your toxin exposure. But if air filters are within your budget, they just might be the perfect investment.

What great information, Erica. I know that when we made the simple switch to a vacuum using HEPA filters, that helped. Then the furnace ones. We’ve started tearing the old carpet out of the house and putting down Pergo floors. That’s helping with allergins.
Now, about the buggers that could be in my bloodstream! I’m going to read this a couple more times.
