I just love magnesium oil and lavender. Especially right before bed. A few years ago, I experienced horrible insomnia and all the experts said it was tied to my stressed out adrenals. So I’ve learned to take stress management seriously. And that’s why I love this magnesium oil and lavender body balm before bed.
I’ve been using lavender with magnesium oil before bed for some time now. And I really feel that using it does improve my sleep quality. I’ve always fallen asleep super easily. But these oils help me sleep soundly through the night without any disruptive mid-evening awakenings.
So I thought, what could be better than putting these ingredients into a super easy nighttime body balm? Something I could gently apply before bed every night that would feel good. It would help nourish my skin. And it would help ready me for a kick-ass, restorative night’s sleep.
Benefits of this magnesium oil lavender body balm
Lavender – I’ve talked about lavender in the past so I’ll be brief here. Lavender is a fabulously calming essential oil. It’s been scientifically tested for its calming properties. And it has been found to be effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders. It’s also known to improve sleep quality. Plus, lavender just smells nice. So it’s a fabulous oil for before bed or during times of stress.
Magnesium oil – Magnesium is a calming mineral. It’s healing to the body when relaxation is needed. It’s good for the treatment of body twitches. It can be helpful when there’s muscle strain. And it has been shown to potentially improve sleep quality and to reduce anxiety.
You can, of course, supplement orally with magnesium if needed. But when you apply magnesium oil to your skin, you enable it to have a direct calming effect. And this is why I like applying magnesium oil before sleep.
The ritual of sleep
Rituals can be extremely important for a good night’s rest. There’s something about a ritual that signals the brain that it’s time for sleep. Doing things like lowering the lights, reading a book, and spending quiet time really helps me wind down.
I’ve had evenings when I don’t feel at all tired come bedtime. And in taking part in a short wind-down routine, I’ve gone from wired to sleepy within 20 minutes. A good sleep routine has literally been a lifesaver for me.

And the magnesium oil lavender body balm is now a fabulous part of my wind-down routine. Applying it to my neck, arms and feet signals my entire body to relax. It’s really a self-nurturing activity. And it smells so nice and calming.
Magnesium oil lavender body balm – What you’ll need
This is so super simple. I’m not into complex. I like immediate gratification.
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 1 Tbsp magnesium oil
- 12 drops lavender essential oil
You’ll need to make sure your coconut oil is in its solid state when starting. If you use it melted, it won’t work. So throw your coconut oil into the refrigerator for about 40 minutes or so if melted.
Take your coconut oil and scoop it into a mixing bowl. Add the magnesium oil and lavender. Then take a mixer and mix it on high for about 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes whipped. I used a hand mixer.
Place the whipped magnesium oil lavender body balm into a jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator. Use it before bed EVERY NIGHT! You’ll thank me, I promise.

It seems like I’m allergic to everything in this mix except for the magnesium oil. Maybe I’ll try it alone and see what happens.

I really need this! I have insomnia all the time and even when I have managed to drift off, I don’t actually feel like I’ve slept at all. I use Lavender already but have never tried Magnesium. I am going to give that a try. Thanks for sharing x

I have to make this and try it right away! I use a magnesium oil spray occasionally and take a magnesium supplement daily. And I love lavender essential oils. With the coconut oil base here, this must be so moisturizing. I love that it combines all the essential elements into body balm!

I am so glad you shared a recipe. I bought magnesium cream a while back and I absolutely love how it helps me sleep but I hate the smell (stale oreos…) and so making my own balm with lavender would be so much better!

Lavender oil has done wonders for my insomnia too! It’s in Lush’s ‘Sleepy’ moisturiser and it gets me to
sleep within 10 minutes which was unheard of for me beforehand. I swear by it!

Sounds like something I want to try. Do you have a favorite magnesium oil source?
Heather says
This sounds awesome! I definitely need to do something to improve my nighttime routine for better sleep.
Eboni Scott says
Can another oil besides coconut be used?
Erica says
I imagine you could – I’ve never tried. But since most oils don’t become solid when exposed to cooler temperatures like coconut oil, it would go on more like an oil than a creamy body balm. But if you’re fine with that, I say you should give it a try.
