Fun topic of the day: acne! Here’s the truth. Pimples aren’t something any of us want to think about. Hell, I didn’t. But in my younger years, I had no choice. See, I was plagued with these bad boys from the time I was about 12 until I was well into my 20s. Here’s what I wish I knew then about natural remedies.
If you haven’t experienced acne, I can only say, “lucky you!” Not only does it mess with your self-confidence. But it reminds you that you’re not in control. Because if you can’t get control of your own skin, then what the hell in life can you control?
And don’t forget about the horrible shame. Your pimples can feel like a banner going out to the world screaming “FLAWED”. Even with makeup, I felt people could see.
The creams, antibiotics, and lotions
If you’ve spent years suffering from breakouts and pimples, I don’t even have to start. You know all the major players. And honestly, I was on all of them.
The Retin-A creams? They kept my skin young, but I swear they made my pimples worse. Antibiotics? I was on them for so long that I pretty much screwed up the bacterial balance in my digestive system. And what about the harsher options like Accutane? I was on that one twice!
Oh, and lets not forget all those drug store creams, lotions and toners. The joy of bringing home that new wonder-product – the one that promises to take a hatchet to your acne breakouts. But it never works. I mean, it worked for that glowing girl on the commercial spot. Just not for me.
The crazy experiment
My skin didn’t magically chill out once I got out of my hormonally turbulent adolescence. Nope, the problem actually grew – literally. It was popping up all over my face. And once my zits morphed into large cysts, I knew the answer couldn’t be found in a cream.
That’s when my gut spoke to me. And it said that the answer wasn’t where I’d become used to looking. Something deeper was off-balance.
And that’s when I overheard someone talk about the connection between wheat intolerance and skin problems. I knew there was such a thing as food sensitivities. But I never imagined food sensitivities could make your skin breakout.
This was a revelation. So I went cold turkey on wheat for 2 weeks. And holy crap! Those pesky buggers went into hiding! Man, did my skin clear up. It was a miracle! I’ll skip focaccia any day for that.
Pimples and food sensitivities
When your body reacts negatively to a food, it becomes inflamed. While wheat was my problem, it might be something different for you. And this inflammation works its way into your skin pores. Pimples are your body’s scream for help. If you treat the symptoms, without fixing the deeper problem, the pesky pimples will continue to come back. Because you haven’t addressed the reason for their screams.
And while I was overjoyed to discover this, I was left with a confusing feeling. Why didn’t my doctor’s tell me about this? Are doctors even aware of the connection between pimples and food sensitivities? Why did I have to figure this out myself? This isn’t to blame my doctors. I just wish I knew sooner.
So if you’ve got those nasty guys popping up on your face, I highly recommend checking this out for yourself. Of course, allergy testing is a great way to start. But even if you allergy test comes up clean, try an elimination diet. Because there’s a difference between an actual food allergy and a food sensitivity. Mine was a sensitivity, meaning it didn’t show on an allergy test. Find out how to do an elimination diet here.
Final Thoughts
And one more thing. If your skin is a broken-out mess, try to cut back on sugar too. Sugar can create hormonal chaos in your body. I had to cut back there too before I saw 100% relief in my breakouts.
But honestly, people tell me they can’t imagine I used to have skin problems. It’s amazing what diet changes can do. If you’ve been suffering from pimples and acne without relief, see if food sensitivities are a part of the problem. The transformation can be amazing

Weirdly, I never ever suffered with spots as a teenager – my skin has always been very dry. However since going gluten free, it’s like my skin has suddenly got the oil to summon spots! Very odd.

I’m 32 and still deal with this! Ugh! I hate reading the cut back on sugar part. I love my Mt. Dew! Your skin does look flawless so I wouldn’t believe you ever had any problems. I will have to try these when I have a problem again.

That’s a great idea to check for food sensitivities, especially when none of the creams, washes or lotions seem to work!

I had no idea that wheat intolerance was a thing until my son would have horrible reactions to things like bread and Cheerios. Cutting out sugar has been a game changer for my skin, I always get a break out if I overdo it!

Thanks for the insights. I’ve been having pretty bad acne lately and was thinking it might be diet and hormone related.

This is seriously so true! I’ve noticed that if I eat a lot of chocolate, I will break out super bad. Which sucks cause I love chocolate, and I’m currently pregnant which means I love it even more LOL. But I would so much rather have nice skin than eat a boat load of chocolate and sweets, especially since cystic acne can be so painful! xo, Brittany Nicole | http://www.theblistblog.com

This is such good advice. I can’t wait to figure out what causes me to have breakouts.
